Interview with Zeds Dead

True Crew is proud have Dylan and Zach of  Zeds Dead, a recent but immensely credible, auditory blessing to the EDM scene. The Toronto-based pair formed ZD in the summer of 2009 and they soon after, with The Killabits, started throwing a weekly party called BassMentality. They’ve hosted these artists you may or may not have heard about – Nero, Skrillex, 12th Planet and Borgore, just to name a few. ZD has an addictive sound that transcends genres and permeates through speakers and dance clubs around the world. Stretch out your hammies and quads before checking out their remixes and originals, or else your body could combust into spontaneous dance choreography.

[Insert Pulp Fiction dance-scene reference here.]

Zeds Dead is well on the way through the start of their nearly 60-city tour, but they managed to slow down for a split second to answer some of our questions.

Top three things you each love about touring? Top three things you each miss the most while on the road?

Top three things we love about touring:

  1. Partying
  2. Finding cool food spots
  3. Exploring different cities

Top three things we miss while on the road

  1. Sleeping
  2. Being in the studio
  3. Laundry.

I was attempting to count all the dates on ‘The Graveyard Tour’ flyer -

- and I lost count after October 7th, your gig at Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI. How do you keep up the energy?

Professionalism.

What does the name “Barrett Richards” mean to you guys? What is your professional and personal relationship with him?

He’s Dylans dad.

A female fan comes running up to you, Dylan, after a set and whispers in your ear. If she turned you on, what did she say?

“Let’s eat cheesburgers and listen to hip hop”

And if she turned you off?

“Play some Dubstep.”

A male fan comes running up to you, Zach, after a set and whispers in your ear. What did he say either way?

Why do I get the whispering dude?

Speaking of fans, ZD killed it at the Middle East show last winter. What are you looking forward to tonight? Any special requests for the green room, like a crystal bowl full of red peanut M&M’s?

Just some fresh socks.

Any pre-set rituals you guys do before playing?

A shot of vodka or whiskey

Any words of wisdom for aspiring DJ’s and music producers out there looking to make a name for themselves and crush the industry as much as Zeds Dead is?

Utilize the internet.

We can’t wait to experience Zeds Dead tear up Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel tonight with B. Rich, Terravita and other crazy-good artists  in Providence, RI – it’s gonna be a shit-show! Check out the Facebook event page or keep readin’ on.

Interview with Michael Vincent Patrick of Designer Drugs

(Photo of Original photo by James Coletta)

Michael Vincent Patrick is a flippin’ fantastic eargasm of a DJ and music producer. MVP makes up half of Designer Drugs, you know, that world tourin’, party rockin’ electro group whose music infests and takes over your body? If you say you love electronic music as much as you say you do, then there is no doubt you’ve heard DD’s bangers like “Riot” and “Zombies,” or their acclaimed “Antonio” remix. For those of you less privy to the scene, perhaps their Mariah Carey “Lovin’ U Long Time” remix will be your gateway Designer Drug tune. Either way, True Crew is more than ecstatic to have an interview with Michael Vincent Patrick as their inaugural blog post.

Nice bum, where ya from? No, really, nice ass. Where is Designer Drugs from?

I’m glad to see you got the ass pics I sent you. I’m from PA but I’m usually in the gym working on my glutes. We live in NYC now but we are currently in the mountains of WV working on our second album. We have a nice ‘lil frat house Sigma Epsilon Chai (SEX).

Not that I Google Image’d DD, but I did. Describe DD’s style and image. Who are you wearing now? And have your eyes always been framed and shielded by (potentially prescription) glass?

Right now I’m wearing Air Jordan’s, zebra print undies, and a 6XL big black Tee. Yeah I’ve been wearing these goggles ever since I went blind in 7th grade. Maybe I got stoned and stared into the sun too long or forgot to eat carrots, but yeah, I’m hopeless with out them. I only pick up grenades if I’m not wearing my glasses. I really want to get Rec Specs.

Favorite country/city/continent you have visited and played? Thee most scrumptious foreign food you have ever tasted? The kookiest souvenir you have ever picked up?

Taipei, Taiwan is fave place to hang out because the kids are super cool. Zouk in Singapore is a great place to DJ. Just ate guinea pig in Peru – the food there is great! As far as souvenirs, I get shot glasses in every city I go to (haha.) We drink a lot… I got this rad skull in Puerto Rico, tarot cards in Paris, satan masks in Peru, and an STD in Europe.

When you’re on the road or in the air, what makes you miss home?

EVERYTHING. I miss my fucking couch. The seating at the airport and in planes sucks so, when I get home, I can’t wait to drop my glutes down on my couch.

A female fan comes running up to you after a set and whispers in your ear. If she turned you on, what did she say? And if she turned you off?

If she turned me on she probably said that she wants to message my feet. If she turned me off she probably said, “Aren’t you Diplo or Steve Aoki?”

I get the latter a lot.

A male fan comes running up to you after a set and whispers in your ear. What did he say either way?

“Have you ever met Steve Aoki?” lol.

You and Theo went to raves in your adolescent years. If you can remember, describe your very first rave.

Hahaha, it was pure insanity. It was at My Airy Lodge in the Poconos. I remember I went with some friends and couldn’t find them for like 6 hours. Then when we left, my car was all distorted and looked like a space ship.

Were you wearing plaid or camouflaged UFO’s?

I just had green parachute pants and dreadlocks.

And was there a song that made your eyes go wide while you vigorously tap your friends shoulder and repeatedly shouted in their deafened ear, “Oh my god, oh my god, I LOVE this SONG!”

Mr Kirk’s Nightmare!!!!” Kids smoking wet and listening to “Mr. Kirk’s Nightmare”… Good times!

What epic NYC parties have you attended? And New England?

Fuck, I went to a few in Queens on acid and candy-flipped in Hartford a few times. We went to Philly a lot and got into mad trouble… So ghetto.

What is the furthest you have ever traveled North, in New England, for a rave you’ve both attended for fun and gotten paid to play?

We DJ’d in Vermont a LONG time ago and came back with cheese and maple syrup.

Are there any pre-set rituals you do before you play a show? What will MVP look like to a fly on the wall 3-minutes prior to playing at Toad’s Place, this Friday (September 16th at Toad’s Place, New Haven, CT?)

I usually have a drink and look into the mirror to make sure I’m looking sexy.

Don’t worry, Michael, we’ll think you’re sexy looking without that drink and mirror. Can’t wait to experience you crushin’ it at Toad’s Place this weekend!

There’s this little internet thing called “Facebook,” or whatever. Some of you might have it. Check out the event page for all the details of the Designer Drugs show at Toad’s Place, New Haven, CT.

Familiarize yourself even more with Designer Drugs’ music too, will ya?
